The ARS540 is a high performance premium long-range radar sensor which enables highly automated driving in combination with other technologies. It provides best radar performance in a state-of-the-art sensor size. One of the benefits of the ARS540 lies in its compactness and flexible usage which makes it easier to use across entire vehicle platforms.
One of the features of the new radar generation is a higher resolution compared with the previous radar generations, with which a more exact picture of the traffic situation can be gained. In addition, road limits such as curbstones as well as the height of objects like the tails of a traffic jam under a bridge are detected thanks to the sensors’ elevation measurement accuracy.
The ARS540 is also based on a scalable modular principle, which, with its graduated function scopes, flexibly supports vehicle manufacturers’ different requirements and electrical-electronic (E/E) architectures.
Thanks to the worldwide trend of using 77 GHz technology, the resolution of the sensors is becoming higher and facilitating, for example, more accurate detection of smaller objects such as a lost spare wheel or an exhaust that has fallen off.
With the ARS540, a range of up to 300 m and an opening angle of ±60° is possible which enables in a first step the realization of premium driver assistance functionalities and in a second step automated driving.
A large opening angle is important in supporting autonomous emergency braking at crossing traffic at intersections, while also detecting motorbikes and cyclists. All new car registrations must fulfill these safety requirements from 2020 onwards in order to achieve the top grade of “five stars” in the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP).
Xilinx and Continental Collaborate to Create Auto Industry’s First Production-Ready 4D Imaging Radar for Autonomous Driving
(NASDAQ: XLNX) and Continental announced that Xilinx will power Continental’s new Advanced Radar Sensor (ARS) 540 with the Zynq® UltraScale+™ MPSoC platform, creating the automotive industry’s first production-ready 4D imaging radar. The collaboration enables newly-produced vehicles equipped with the ARS540 to realize SAE J3016 Level 2 functionalities and will pave the way toward Level 5 autonomous driving systems.
4D imaging radar determines an object’s location in range, azimuth, elevation, and relative speed to provide detailed information about the driving environment not provided by earlier automotive radar systems that capture only speed and azimuth. Continental’s ARS540 is a premium, long-range 4D imaging radar with high resolution and 300-meter range. Its wide, ± 60° field-of-view enables multi-hypothesis tracking for precise prediction while driving, which is critical for managing complex driving scenarios, such as the detection of a traffic jam under a bridge. In addition, the ARS540 system’s high horizontal and vertical resolution enables detection of potentially hazardous objects on the road and responds appropriately. By supporting SAE Level 2 where the human driver is responsible for supervising vehicle control, and extending to fully autonomous Level 5, the ARS540 showcases the scalable usage of the sensor.
